Former army barracks converted into a characterful hotel that retains a sense of history. Ideally located just beside the main square.
The popular medium class Hotel Castelmar oozes history and character. It is on the edge of Campeche’s colonial centre, and the building – constructed in 1800 – was originally a Spanish barracks before being transformed a hundred years ago into one of the city’s first hotels.
Remodelled and now sporting a vivid blue façade, it retains its colonial ambience with traditional ochre and russet décor, beams, cedar wood furniture, archways and an original patio filled with a profusion of plants and flowers. There is a swimming pool and wireless internet throughout.
Some rooms may be susceptible to street noise owing to the location, but those that like to be in the thick of things will find any negatives outweighed by the convenience of the hotel’s position right at the heart of the historic town centre.
